Spacing & Support for U7

U7 Soccer Practice Plan: Building Spacing & Support (90 Minutes)

Introduction:

Welcome to today’s U7 soccer practice session! Our focus will be on teaching young players the importance of spacing and supporting teammates. By the end of this 90-minute session, your players will develop a better understanding of moving into space, staying spread out, and helping each other on the field. This plan keeps things fun, engaging, and age-appropriate.

Warm-Up:

Begin with a fun warm-up to get everyone moving and set the tone for a positive practice.

  • Activity: Freeze Tag (10 Minutes)
  • One or two players are “it.” If tagged, players freeze until a teammate unfreezes them by tapping their shoulder.
  • Encourages movement, awareness, and teamwork.

Skill Activity #1: Passing in Pairs (15 Minutes)

Build basic passing and introduce the idea of moving into space after each pass.

  • Players partner up and pass the ball back and forth.
  • After each pass, the player without the ball moves to a new spot within a designated area to receive the next pass.
  • Encourage quick movement and keeping heads up.

Skill Activity #2: Space Invaders Game (20 Minutes)

A game designed to help players understand how to find and use open spaces.

  • Mark a grid with cones (about 20×20 yards).
  • Assign 2-3 players as “invaders” who try to tag players dribbling balls.
  • Dribblers must keep their heads up, use open space, and avoid the invaders.
  • Switch roles frequently to keep everyone engaged.

Small-Sided Game: 3v3 or 4v4 (30 Minutes)

Set up small games to encourage natural use of spacing and support in a realistic setting.

  • Create multiple small fields if you have enough players.
  • Focus on spreading out, passing to teammates, and moving into open areas.
  • Rotate teams every 8-10 minutes for variety and fun.

Scrimmage: Full-Field Game (10 Minutes)

End practice with a larger game to reinforce the concepts learned.

  • Play 5v5 or 6v6, based on numbers, with no coaching interruptions.
  • Let the kids play and try to apply what they’ve learned about spacing and support.

Coaching Points:

  • Encourage players to keep their heads up and look for open teammates.
  • Remind them to move away from crowded areas and use space on the field.
  • Praise both passing and movement off the ball.
  • Keep instructions simple and positive to maintain engagement.
  • Rotate positions so every player experiences different roles.
