Small-Sided Game Tactics for U10

U10 Soccer Practice: Developing Small-Sided Game Tactics

Intro:

Welcome to our 90-minute U10 soccer practice session focused on small-sided game tactics! This session is designed to help players understand spacing, support, and movement, all within dynamic game-like environments. Small-sided games give every player more touches on the ball and offer the perfect platform for tactical learning at a young age.

Warm-Up:

Start the session with a 10-minute dynamic warm-up to get the players moving and ready for action. Use a fun activity like “Freeze Tag” or a simple dribbling relay to activate their muscles and focus their attention.

  • Light jogging around the field
  • High knees, butt kicks, and side shuffles
  • Dynamic stretches (leg swings, arm circles)
  • Dribbling in open space with quick changes of direction

Main Drill 1: 3v3 Continuous Play (25 minutes)

Set up two small fields (25×20 yards each) so multiple games can run simultaneously. Divide players into teams of three. Play continuous 3v3 games with quick rotations every 3-4 minutes, ensuring all players stay engaged and receive lots of playing time.

  • Focus on spreading out when attacking
  • Encourage quick passes and movement off the ball
  • Rotate defenders and attackers regularly

Main Drill 2: 4v4 to Mini Goals (20 minutes)

After a water break, transition to a 4v4 game with mini goals (no goalkeepers needed). Mark a field about 30×25 yards. No throw-ins—when the ball goes out, restart with a pass-in.

  • Emphasize supporting angles and communication
  • Encourage players to spread the field wide and use the space
  • Rotate teams for balanced competition and maximum touches

Scrimmage: 5v5 Game With Coaching (25 minutes)

Finish the practice with a larger 5v5 scrimmage (including goalkeepers if available). Use a 35×25 yard field. Pause the game occasionally to highlight teaching moments, such as switching play or supporting teammates.

  • Encourage decision-making and creativity
  • Remind players to look for open teammates and move into space
  • Focus on teamwork and positive communication

Coaching Points:

  • Encourage players to keep their heads up and scan the field
  • Teach the importance of width and spacing when in possession
  • Praise players for communicating and supporting one another
  • Highlight moments when players make good decisions off the ball
  • Celebrate effort and teamwork as much as skillful play
