Passing & Receiving for U9

90-Minute U9 Soccer Practice: Passing & Receiving Focus

Intro:

Welcome to our U9 soccer training session, designed to help young players improve their passing and receiving skills. This 90-minute practice is perfect for building fundamental technique, teamwork, and confidence on the ball. Let’s get started!

Warm-Up:

Begin with a fun and dynamic warm-up to get everyone moving and ready to play.

  • Activity: “Freeze Tag with a Ball”
  • Each player dribbles a ball in the playing area.
  • Select 2-3 taggers (without balls) who try to tag dribblers.
  • If tagged, players freeze with their ball above their head until a teammate “unfreezes” them by passing their own ball through the frozen player’s legs.
  • Play for 8-10 minutes, rotating taggers.

Drill 1: Passing Gates

This drill focuses on developing accurate passing and controlled receiving.

  • Set up pairs of cones (“gates”) 2 yards apart throughout the area.
  • Players partner up, each pair with one ball.
  • Players must pass the ball through the gates to each other, moving from gate to gate after 3 successful passes.
  • Progression: Use only left/right foot or increase passing distance.
  • Duration: 15 minutes.

Drill 2: Passing Square

Encourage movement and awareness while practicing passing and receiving from multiple angles.

  • Create a 15×15 yard square with cones at each corner.
  • Divide players into groups of 4-5 at each corner.
  • The first player passes to the next corner and follows their pass to join that line.
  • Emphasize one- or two-touch passing and receiving with the correct foot.
  • After a few minutes, reverse the direction.
  • Duration: 15 minutes.

Drill 3: Passing Under Pressure

Add pressure and decision-making as players improve their passing under realistic game situations.

  • Set up a 20×20 yard grid.
  • Divide players into two teams: one team with pinnies, one without.
  • Each team tries to complete 5 consecutive passes while the other team tries to intercept.
  • If the ball is intercepted or goes out, the other team takes possession.
  • Rotate teams and keep score to add competition.
  • Duration: 20 minutes.

Scrimmage:

End the session with a small-sided game to reinforce skills in a realistic context.

  • Set up a field appropriate for your group size (e.g., 5v5 or 6v6).
  • Encourage players to use passing and receiving skills practiced earlier.
  • Coach from the sidelines and praise good decisions and teamwork.
  • Duration: 25-30 minutes.

Coaching Points:

  • Encourage players to communicate with each other when passing and receiving.
  • Stress the importance of using both feet.
  • Focus on accuracy over power in passing.
  • Remind players to check their surroundings before receiving the ball.
  • Praise effort, teamwork, and improvement throughout the session.
