90-Minute U8 Soccer Practice: Dribbling & 1v1 Skills
Introduction:
Welcome to our U8 soccer practice session focused on dribbling and 1v1 attacking skills! This 90-minute plan is designed for young players to build confidence on the ball, develop control, and learn how to beat a defender in game situations. All activities are age-appropriate, engaging, and easy to run for coaches and parents.
Warm-Up:
Start the session with a fun, energetic warm-up to get players moving and comfortable with the ball at their feet.
Activity: Freeze Dribble Tag
- All players dribble a ball inside a defined area (20×20 yards).
- Coach (or a chosen player) is ‘it’ and tries to tag players while they’re dribbling.
- If tagged, players freeze with their ball above their head. Teammates can unfreeze them by giving a high-five.
- Play for 5 minutes, switch taggers as needed.
Main Dribbling Drill:
Activity: Traffic Jam Dribbling
- Set up cones randomly in a 20×20 yard grid to create a “traffic jam.”
- Each player has a ball and must dribble throughout the area, weaving around cones and each other.
- Encourage them to use different parts of the foot: inside, outside, sole.
- On the coach’s signal, players change speed or direction.
- Play for 10 minutes with periodic breaks to discuss technique.
1v1 Attacking Drill:
Activity: 1v1 Gate Game
- Set up several small cone “gates” (about 2 yards wide) scattered around the grid.
- Players work in pairs: one attacker with a ball, one defender.
- The attacker scores a point by dribbling through any gate without losing the ball to the defender.
- After 60 seconds, switch roles. Rotate partners every round for variety.
- Play 4-5 rounds.
Fun Group Activity:
Activity: Sharks and Minnows
- Choose 2 “sharks” who do not have soccer balls. The rest are “minnows” with a ball each.
- In a 20×20 yard rectangle, minnows try to dribble from one end to the other without losing the ball to a shark.
- If a minnow’s ball is kicked away, they become a shark for the next round.
- Continue until only one minnow remains. Rotate starting sharks for new rounds.
Small-Sided Scrimmage:
Finish with a small-sided game to let players apply their dribbling and 1v1 skills in real game situations.
- Divide players into two teams of 4-6 (adjust based on numbers).
- Play 5v5 or 4v4 with small goals on a 30×20 yard field.
- Encourage players to take on defenders and use their dribbling skills when appropriate.
- Play for 20-25 minutes, rotating substitutes to ensure everyone gets plenty of playing time.
Coaching Points:
- Keep the ball close while dribbling, using soft touches.
- Encourage players to use different parts of their feet for better control.
- Keep heads up to see space, defenders, and teammates.
- Change speed and direction to beat defenders in 1v1 situations.
- Be positive – encourage creativity and not to worry about mistakes.
