U8 Soccer Practice: Defending Corners Made Fun
Introduction:
Welcome coaches and parents! This 90-minute practice plan is designed for U8 players and focuses on teaching the basics of defending corners. The session includes a warm-up, targeted drills, a small-sided scrimmage, and essential coaching points to help young players understand positioning, teamwork, and defensive awareness during corner kicks.
Warm-Up:
Start with a fun and energetic warm-up to get the players moving and ready to learn. This will help with focus and reduce the risk of injury.
- Game: Freeze Tag (10 minutes)
- Setup: Use cones to mark a 20×20 yard space. One or two players are “taggers” who try to freeze others by tagging them. Frozen players stand with legs apart and are unfrozen when a teammate crawls through their legs.
- Goal: Get everyone moving, changing direction, and working together.
Technical Activity: Defensive Body Positioning (15 minutes)
Help players learn how to use their bodies to defend and stay between the ball and the goal.
- Setup: Pair up players. One is the “defender,” the other is the “attacker.”
- Instructions: Attacker tries to move past the defender (sideways, backwards, etc.) within a small grid. Defender must stay between attacker and a cone “goal.”
- Switch roles every 2 minutes.
Main Drill: Defending Corners (35 minutes)
This activity introduces basic concepts for defending corner kicks in an age-appropriate way.
- Setup: Use a portion of the penalty area. Place a goal and set up cones to mark the six-yard box. Assign 4 defenders, 3 attackers, a goalkeeper, and a corner taker.
- Instructions: The corner taker delivers a ball into the box. Defenders try to clear the ball out; attackers try to score. After each turn, rotate players so everyone gets experience in different roles.
- Focus on defenders marking a player, staying goal-side, and communicating with each other.
- Progression: Add a second corner taker or vary the number of defenders/attackers based on group size.
Small-Sided Scrimmage: (25 minutes)
Let the players apply what they’ve learned in a fun, game-like setting.
- Play 5v5 or 6v6 on a small field with goals.
- Every 3-5 minutes, pause play and set up a corner kick for each team.
- Encourage players to use their defensive skills from earlier in the practice.
Coaching Points:
- Stay goal-side: Always position yourself between your opponent and your own goal.
- Mark an opponent: Each defender should watch and stick close to an attacker.
- Be alert: Watch the ball and react quickly to clear it away.
- Communicate: Talk to teammates and call for the ball or let others know who to mark.
- Use your feet, not hands: Remind players to defend using their body and feet only.
Conclusion:
Finish with a team talk. Praise effort, teamwork, and improvement. Ask players what they learned about defending corners. Encourage them to practice at home using a ball and a friend or family member.
