U6 Soccer Practice: Fun with Attacking Corners (90-Minute Session)
Introduction:
Welcome to our U6 soccer practice focused on introducing young players to attacking corners! This session is designed to be fun, engaging, and to help players understand the basics of taking and attacking corner kicks. The practice is suitable for children aged 5-6 years old, with lots of activities and encouragement to keep everyone moving and learning.
Warm-Up:
Start with a 10-minute warm-up to get the players energized and ready to learn. Use simple movement-based games that incorporate basic soccer skills.
- Sharks and Minnows: Set up a small grid. The “sharks” try to steal the ball from the “minnows” as they dribble across the area.
- Red Light, Green Light: Players dribble their ball and stop or go depending on your commands.
Technical Activity:
Next, spend about 15 minutes on a technical activity to develop basic ball skills and introduce the idea of crossing or kicking the ball from the corner.
- Target Passing: Set up small cones or goals near the box. Players take turns from the corner, aiming to pass the ball toward the target where teammates try to score with a single touch.
- Encourage accurate passing and simple movement.
Main Drill:
For 25 minutes, focus on practicing attacking corners in a game-like setup.
- Set up a small goal and create a corner area with cones.
- Divide players into two teams. One team takes corners, and the other defends.
- Rotate roles every few tries so everyone gets a chance to attack and defend.
- Keep it simple: one player crosses, one or two players try to score, and the rest defend.
- Encourage lots of movement and positive effort.
Fun Game:
Add a 15-minute fun game to keep spirits high and reinforce what was learned.
- Corners and Goals: Play a mini-game where every restart is a corner kick. Emphasize trying to score from the corners and celebrate all attempts.
- Mix up teams and let everyone try different roles.
Scrimmage:
Finish with a 20-minute small-sided scrimmage. Let the game flow but pause occasionally to reinforce attacking corners.
- Use regular corner kicks on goal kicks out of bounds.
- Encourage players to set up quickly and look for teammates in the box.
Coaching Points:
- Make sure everyone knows where to stand for a corner kick.
- Encourage players to kick the ball toward teammates in front of the goal.
- Remind attackers to move and find space to receive the ball.
- Praise effort and teamwork, not just goals.
- Keep instructions simple and use lots of encouragement.
