90-Minute U9 Soccer Practice: Turning & Shielding Skills
Introduction:
Welcome to our 90-minute U9 soccer session focused on developing turning and shielding skills. These foundational abilities help young players keep possession of the ball, maneuver under pressure, and make smart plays during games. This session includes fun activities, technical drills, and a small-sided game to reinforce the concepts.
Warm-Up:
Start the practice with a dynamic warm-up to get players moving and engaged.
- Jogging around the field (2 minutes)
- High knees and butt kicks (1 minute each)
- Dynamic stretches: lunges, arm circles, hip rotations (3 minutes)
- Follow-the-leader dribbling: Players pair up, one leads with the ball, and the other follows (5 minutes)
Activity 1: Turning Fundamentals
Teach key turning techniques such as the inside turn, outside turn, and drag-back. Demonstrate each move, then have players practice in open space.
- Players dribble freely in a marked area
- On coach’s signal, perform a specific turn (inside, outside, or drag-back)
- Repeat for 10 minutes, rotating turns
Activity 2: Shielding Basics
Introduce shielding by having players protect the ball from a passive defender.
- Players work in pairs: one attacker, one defender
- Attacker holds the ball, using their body to shield while keeping control
- Defender applies light pressure but does not tackle
- Switch roles after 1-2 minutes; repeat several times (10 minutes)
Drill: Turning & Shielding in Pairs
Combine turning and shielding in a competitive setting.
- Set up small grids (10×10 yards), pairs start at the center
- Attacker tries to keep the ball for 20 seconds using shielding and turns
- Defender tries to win the ball by applying pressure
- Switch roles and repeat; rotate partners every few rounds (15 minutes)
Drill: Turning Under Pressure
Practice turning away from a defender in a game-like situation.
- Players line up in two lines, one with balls (attackers), one without (defenders)
- Attacker dribbles toward a cone, defender chases from behind
- At the cone, attacker performs a turn and tries to shield the ball from the defender for 5 seconds
- Switch roles after each turn (15 minutes)
Scrimmage:
Finish with a small-sided game (5v5 or 6v6) on a reduced-size field to encourage lots of touches and 1v1 situations.
- Encourage players to use turns and shielding when under pressure
- Pause the game occasionally to highlight good examples of turning and shielding
- Play for 20 minutes
Coaching Points:
- Keep your body between the ball and the defender when shielding
- Bend your knees and stay low for better balance
- Use your arms for balance, but don’t push
- Keep your head up to see the field when turning
- Practice different types of turns and choose the right one depending on the defender’s position
- Encourage confidence in using both feet for turns and shielding
