U8 Soccer Practice: Developing Attacking Principles (Width, Depth, Penetration)
Intro:
Welcome to today’s U8 soccer practice! Our focus will be on introducing attacking concepts—specifically width, depth, and penetration. These ideas will help young players understand how to spread out, support teammates, and create scoring opportunities. The session will feature engaging activities designed for fun and development.
Warm-Up:
Let’s get our bodies moving and minds ready with a fun, dynamic warm-up.
- Name Game Dribble: Each child has a ball and must dribble inside a defined square. When the coach calls a player’s name, that player must freeze. Everyone else keeps dribbling. Rotate names quickly to keep kids alert and moving.
Main Activity 1: Width & Depth Passing Gates
Players will work in small groups to practice spreading out (using width and depth) while passing.
- Set up several small gates (two cones about 2 yards apart).
- Divide players into groups of three.
- Players must pass through gates to teammates, encouraging them to move wide and deep to receive the ball.
- After each pass, the passer finds open space.
Main Activity 2: Penetration Dribble & Pass
This activity encourages players to look forward and break lines—penetrating the defense.
- Set up a grid (20×15 yards) with a start line and a scoring line.
- Players, in pairs, start at the same end. The first player dribbles toward the scoring line, trying to beat a passive defender (coach or another player).
- If successful, the player passes to their partner, who repeats the action.
- Switch roles after each turn.
Main Activity 3: 3v3 to Mini Goals
Apply the attacking concepts in a small-sided game.
- Set up two small fields with mini goals (no goalkeepers).
- Play 3v3. Encourage players to use the whole field (width), support teammates (depth), and look for chances to go forward (penetration).
- Rotate teams every 4-5 minutes.
Scrimmage:
End practice with a 6v6 scrimmage (or adjust numbers based on group size). Let players play with minimal interruption, but occasionally freeze play to highlight good examples of width, depth, or penetration.
Coaching Points:
- Encourage players to spread out and use the full width of the field.
- Remind them to move into open spaces to support teammates (depth).
- Look for opportunities to dribble or pass forward (penetration).
- Praise creative attempts and teamwork.
- Keep instructions clear, simple, and positive—focus on fun and learning.
