Agility & Movement for U6

90-Minute U6 Soccer Practice: Agility & Movement Focus

Intro:

Welcome to today’s U6 soccer practice session! Our focus is on developing agility and movement through fun, engaging activities. At this young age, players learn best when they’re active, imaginative, and always moving. This 90-minute session is designed to keep energy levels high while building foundational skills for future soccer success.

Warm-Up:

Start with a 10-minute warm-up to get the kids moving and excited. Keep instructions simple and demonstrate each activity.

  • Animal Movements: Ask players to move like different animals (e.g., hop like a frog, run like a cheetah, waddle like a duck) across the field.
  • Red Light, Green Light: Players run when you say “green light” and freeze on “red light.” Add variations like skipping or hopping.

Main Agility Drills:

Spend 30 minutes on activities that build quick feet and body control while keeping things light and playful.

  • Sharks and Minnows (15 minutes):

    • Pick 1-2 “sharks” in the middle; all others are “minnows.”
    • Minnows try to run from one end line to the other without being tagged.
    • If tagged, they become sharks.
  • Agility Ladder or Cone Course (15 minutes):

    • Set up cones or a ladder in a zigzag or ladder pattern.
    • Players run, hop, or side-step through the course, focusing on fast feet and quick changes of direction.
    • Repeat several times, cheering them on!

Movement with the Ball:

For 20 minutes, introduce the ball to keep building agility, balance, and coordination.

  • Dribble Freeze Tag:

    • Each player has a ball and dribbles in a defined area.
    • “Taggers” (start with 1-2) try to tag other players; if tagged, the player freezes until another untagged player taps their ball.
    • Switch taggers frequently for fun!
  • Follow the Leader:

    • Players pair up or form small groups.
    • The leader dribbles with the ball, using turns and changes of speed; others follow and mimic movements.

Scrimmage:

Play a small-sided game (4v4 or 5v5) for 20-25 minutes. No goalkeepers needed at this age. Let them play, encourage movement, and celebrate effort and teamwork!

Coaching Points:

  • Keep instructions short and clear—show, don’t tell.
  • Emphasize having fun and staying active above all else.
  • Encourage players to move in all directions, not just forward.
  • Celebrate effort, participation, and creative movement.
  • Rotate roles and switch up games frequently to keep interest high.
  • Use lots of praise and positive reinforcement.
