Switching the Point of Attack for U9

U9 Soccer Practice: Switching the Point of Attack (90-Minute Session)

Introduction:

Welcome to today’s U9 soccer practice! This 90-minute session is designed to help players understand and practice switching the point of attack. Learning how to quickly move the ball from one side of the field to the other is a critical skill that helps teams evade pressure and find more space to attack. Our activities today will build technical footwork, awareness, and smart decision-making.

Warm-Up:

We’ll begin with a dynamic warm-up to get players moving, engaged, and ready to learn. The warm-up will include fun ball mastery activities and movement exercises.

  • 5 minutes: Light jogging, high knees, and dynamic stretches (leg swings, arm circles).
  • 10 minutes: Ball Mastery Squares — Each player with a ball inside a grid, performing toe taps, foundation touches, and inside-outside dribbles.
  • 5 minutes: Passing in Pairs — Players work in pairs, passing and receiving with both feet, focusing on accuracy and first touch.

Main Drill 1: 4v2 Keep-Away in Squares (15 minutes)

Set up two 10×10 yard grids side by side. In each grid, organize 4 attackers and 2 defenders. The attackers try to keep possession, and when defenders win the ball, they switch roles.

  • Objective: Maintain possession and look for opportunities to quickly switch the ball to the other grid when possible.
  • Progression: When a pass is played from one grid to another, all attackers move to support in the new grid.

Main Drill 2: Switching Channels Game (25 minutes)

Create a playing area with three vertical channels (left, center, right). Divide the players into two teams. Teams score a point each time they complete 5 passes in one channel and then successfully move the ball to a different channel. Defensive team tries to intercept and win the ball.

  • Encourage players to use the width of the field and look for open teammates in other channels.
  • After a switch, encourage quick support and movement off the ball.

Main Drill 3: 5v5 to Side Goals (20 minutes)

Set up a 5v5 game with two small goals on each end line, positioned wide. Teams can score in either goal, but a point is only awarded if the attacking team switches the ball from one sideline to the other before shooting.

  • This setup encourages awareness and quick ball movement to change the point of attack.
  • Rotate players so everyone experiences different positions.

Scrimmage:

Conclude with a 7v7 free play scrimmage (20 minutes), using the full field. Reinforce the day’s focus by rewarding goals that result from switching the ball across the field. Allow natural play, providing brief stoppages to highlight great switches or decision-making.

Coaching Points:

  • Encourage players to keep their heads up and scan the field for open space.
  • Emphasize the importance of quick, accurate passing.
  • Remind players to communicate and support each other off the ball.
  • Recognize when to play simple and when to switch play to exploit space.
  • Celebrate effort, good decisions, and creative play.
