Intro:
This session focuses on developing young players’ understanding of defensive principles such as delay, deny, and deflect. These foundational skills help players learn how to slow down attackers, prevent scoring opportunities, and regain possession, enhancing their overall defensive capabilities.
Warm-Up:
Area size: 20×20 yards
Players: Groups of 5–6 players
Estimated Time: 10 minutes
Instructions:
- Set up a square grid using cones.
- Players dribble inside the grid, maintaining control of the ball.
- On a coach’s signal, players switch directions while keeping the ball close.
- Emphasize control and awareness of space.
Setup tip: Set up the field 10–15 minutes before the session, starting with the largest drill area first.
Drill 1: Delay the Attacker
Playing Area: 15×25 yards
Players: 3 defenders, 2 attackers per group
Coach Position: On the sideline to observe and provide feedback
Estimated Time: 20 minutes
Equipment:
- Cones to mark the area
- Small pug goals
Instructions:
- Set up two small pug goals at one end of the grid.
- Defenders start at the opposite end, attackers start in the center.
- Attackers try to score on small goals while defenders work to delay their progress.
- Focus on body positioning to slow down attackers.
Drill 2: Deny the Pass
Playing Area: 20×30 yards
Players: 4 players per group, 2 defenders, 2 attackers
Coach Position: Positioned centrally to give instructions and correct technique

- Cones for boundary markers
- Small pug goals
Instructions:
- Divide the area into two halves with cones.
- Attackers must pass the ball to each other while moving towards the goal.
- Defenders work together to intercept passes and block shooting lanes.

Drill 3: Deflect and Counter
Playing Area: 25×20 yards
Players: 3 defenders, 2 attackers per rotation
Coach Position: Near the goal area to oversee play and guide defenders

- Cones for grid setup
- Game-size goal
Instructions:
- Organize the defenders in front of the game-size goal.
- Attackers start from the center line and attempt to score.
- Defenders aim to deflect shots and quickly transition to a counterattack.
- Focus on clearances and quick transition play.

- Encourage defenders to stay balanced and low when approaching attackers.
- Stress the importance of communication between defenders.
- Highlight the need for defenders to read the attacker’s intentions.
- Encourage players to quickly recover their defensive positions after intercepting or deflecting.
