Ball Mastery

U8 Soccer Practice Plan: 90-Minute Ball Mastery Session

Intro:

Welcome to today’s U8 soccer practice focused on Ball Mastery! This 90-minute session is designed to help young players develop essential ball-handling skills, build confidence with the ball at their feet, and have fun while learning. The activities below are age-appropriate, high-energy, and easy to set up for coaches and volunteers.

Warm-Up:

Activity: Red Light, Green Light
This fun game gets players moving and comfortable dribbling the ball while listening for instructions.

  • Players each have a ball and line up on the starting line.
  • Coach calls out “Green Light” for players to dribble forward and “Red Light” to stop with close ball control.
  • Players must freeze their ball instantly on “Red Light.” If not, they return to the start.
  • The first player to reach the finish line wins.

Main Ball Mastery Drills:

Drill 1: Foundation Touches
Players practice “tick-tocks” (inside-inside touches) to build comfort using both feet.

  • Players spread out with a ball each.
  • On coach’s signal, players lightly tap the ball between their feet for 30 seconds.
  • Repeat using the outside of the foot, sole rolls, and toe taps.
  • Encourage quick feet and soft touches.

Drill 2: Dribble Maze
Set up a “maze” with cones spaced randomly 1-2 yards apart. Players dribble through the maze, avoiding cones and other players.

  • Players weave in and out of the cones with close control.
  • Emphasize use of both feet and different surfaces of the foot.
  • Challenge players to go faster without touching any cones.
  • Add variations: dribble only with left/right foot, or “stop and start” at each cone.

Drill 3: 1v1 Ball Steal
Players develop shielding, turning, and safe ball protection skills.

  • Pair up players; one is the attacker, one is the defender.
  • Attacker tries to keep the ball away from the defender within a small grid (10×10 yards).
  • After 30 seconds, switch roles.
  • Focus on shielding with the body, using turns and feints.

Small-Sided Scrimmage:

Conclude the session with a small-sided game (4v4 or 5v5) to reinforce ball mastery in real game situations.

  • Encourage players to use skills practiced earlier in the session.
  • Rotate teams and positions every few minutes to keep everyone engaged.
  • Coach provides positive feedback and reminders on ball control.

Coaching Points:

  • Keep the ball close to your feet at all times.
  • Use both feet and all parts of your foot (inside, outside, sole).
  • Keep your head up and scan for space and teammates.
  • Encourage creativity and confidence during drills and the scrimmage.
  • Give lots of praise for effort and improvement, not just success.
